-=[ Ranger Guild ]=-
Rangers are experts in the ways of the forest. Their unique
combination of abilities allow them to move almost undetected
through forests. Due to their tie with nature, they also gain
some spells relating to nature. Rangers are also superb fighters,
able to use any weapon and gaining 12 hit points per constitution.
However, their affinity towards natural items keeps Rangers from
wearing most metallic armour with the exception of rings, bracers
and amulets. Rangers are generally expected to be good but there
are no restrictions to stay in good align.
Ranger 'Perks'
--------------
When a Ranger reaches level 16 (Prominent Archer), he may attempt
to get a bird of his own. A ranger must quest to obtain a bird and
follow many steps. First the Ranger must find a nest with a suitable
egg and successfully steal the egg from the nest. If the Ranger is
unsuccessful at stealing the egg, the mother bird may get angry and
attack. Once the egg is stolen, it must be brought back to the
incubation room by the Ranger guild and hatched. The hatching takes
some time. The hatchling is young and must be trained before it respond
to commands. At birth, it only understands to follow the Ranger who
hatched it ('bird follow'). The hatchling must be taught other commands.
The process of teaching the hatchling is takes much time, almost 30
minutes for some. Those more skilled in falconry can teach their
hatchlings faster. The hatchling must remain with the Ranger the
entire time it is being taught.
Once the bird has been successfully taught, the Ranger gets a pair of
falconry gloves. These gloves are specific for each Ranger and cannot
be exchanged. Only the Ranger who owns the gloves can use the gloves
to call the bird. These gloves should not be lost in a crash but they
can be stolen. If the gloves are stolen, the Ranger has to go through
the process of getting a bird again. With the gloves the Ranger gets
many commands to control the bird. The Ranger can also name his bird
with the command 'name bird'. This allows the Ranger to give the bird
a name, description and specify it's race.
Ranger birds are special and different than other charmed monsters or
called creatures, such as the Paladin steed. A Ranger's bird relays all
that is said in the room to the Ranger. It also shows the Ranger the
description of the room it is in. The birds can be controlled remotely
through the Ranger's falconry gloves. The commands are listed on the
gloves for quick reference by the Ranger.
Birds respond to the following commands when in the same room as the
Ranger: stay, follow, get, drop, kill, leave, and any soul commands.
Leave tells the bird to go back to its perch until you need it again.
These commands are given by ' ' or 'send '.
The bird may at times refuse to do some commands. This can be minimized
by having more skills in falconry.
Due to the strong relationship between the Ranger and bird, any Ranger
who kills their own bird will be struck with death.
Ranger Skills from other Classes
--------------------------------
Rangers have a combination of skills from several classes as well as
their own unique skills.
Stealth
This skill is primarily a thief skill but Rangers have discovered
stealth is key to survival in the forests.
Commands related to stealth:
move silently (already aliased ms for rangers)
hide in shadows (aliased hs for rangers)
Nature Sphere
This is a cleric sphere. Due to their unique ties with nature,
Rangers can also call on the gods to grant them these spells.
As with clerics, the wisdom of the Ranger determines how fast the
Ranger regains spent spell points.
Skills gained from fighters:
Unarmed - Skills at hand-to-hand combat
Two Weapon - Ability to wield long weapons or more than one weapon
Multi Attack - Ability to hit your target many times
Armouring - Skills at sewing your own armour or repairing armour
Commands related to armouring:
repair [armour]
make [armour] (when in certain tanner's shops)
Ranger Specific Skills
----------------------
Falconry
All skills related to the Ranger's bird. Better falconry skills
means better control of birds. The level of the bird is also dependant
on the Ranger's skills in falconry.
Commands related to falconry:
steal egg
hatch egg (when in the hatching room by the guild)
teach hatchling
bird control commands on falconry gloves
Tracking
Skills related to orienting oneself or tracking others. Better tracking
skills means more success.
Commands related to tracking:
track [who]
Herblore
A special group of healing spells specifically for Rangers. A Ranger can
use his knowledge of forest plants to make healing compounds.
Commands related to herblore:
cure [type] [who]
Archery
Rangers, in addition to normal weapons, can also use bows and arrows to
hunt. Arrows do only a one time damage. However, the hit of an arrow in
the skilled hands of a Ranger can do more damage that normal weapons can
in one hit. The Ranger runs the risk of the target attacking if the target
realizes who shot the arrow. This risk can be minimized by hiding before
shooting or by having good archery skills.
Commands related to archery (when you have a bow):
string bow
unstring bow
draw string (prompts for target)
Ranger Equipment
----------------
A Ranger may use any weapon he has the skill to wield. Many Rangers also
make use of their bow and arrow for hunting.
A Ranger can usually only wear armour made of natural materials. These
include leather, bone, crystal, ivory, ceramic, cloth, and glass. A Ranger
can wear small items made of metal such as rings and bracers. Rangers
can take the skin or hides from their kills and turn them into leather
armour using their armouring skills by going to some tanner shops. Armours
made of natural materials can also be found in various places throughout
the realms.
