Volume I, Issue II *All MUD news thats fit to print* July 21, 1998
IntroductionWell, the changes are coming fast and furious now, so I am going to be putting out this newsletter more often than I had originally planned (at least for a little while). If you have anything you wish to publish in the newsletter, email it to darktoast69@hotmail.com and I will include it in a 'Letters to the Admin' section of the next issue. Back issues of the newsletter are available for browsing from the Malevolence web page.

Now Playing: Your RequestsEver fight a Shadow Asassin, get him almost dead, and have him seek shelter in the bank or the shop? Krog the shopkeeper and Daridian the vault watcher became so annoyed with this that they installed new doors to keep them out. (As begged for by Beedybeed)

To make it even MORE obvious where the possible exits from a room are, the doors will now show in green, just like the other exits. (As suggested by Sam)

Otis, sitting on the dock by the bay, has displaced Greeli the thief. Greeli could not stand the sound of his singing so he now wanders the town. (yes it really was a request from a player, not telling who)

MUDLIB ChangesThinking that there should be some bonuses for players that were not a member of a guild, but chose to remain single classed, some changes have taken place.

The first class to get these changes is the Thief class. Look for the fighter class to benefit from similar upgrades in the not too distant future. Thieves, check your guild board for the juicy details
Other Players: if you catch a thief stealing from you, you can now kill them (or try to anyway) PK rules or no PK rules.

The illusion spells have been upgraded. Permanent illusion is now indeed permanent (Sin should appreciate this). Also if you cast an illusion on a rock to make it look like a sword, 'look rock' wont work anymore. Oh yeah, casting illusion to make stuff into gems for spell use doesnt work anymore either.

In appreciation for the Universal Life Church accepting me as an ordained Minister, the pretitles of the Cleric class have been altered to reflect the title of the ULC. Besides, the old pretitles were just the same as the fighters. Hopefully you will find them as amusing as I do. (Are there any high level clerics out there?)

The Ballistas mounted on the ships are no longer just for show. If you can find ballista bolts you can attack other ships with them. If a ship takes too much damage it will sink, leaving the occupants to fend for their lives. Because of the peculiar currents of this world, castaways almost always wash up on Skol island. Sunken ships will not repop until reboot.

The City Hall in Harborside has opened for business. Civic minded adventurers will find a Creator Application room there, as well as a Creator Assigned Quest board. The Quest Board will not be available until Perin gets settled into Houston. (See last issue for details)

Area ChangesThe deep dark caves in Xanadu are now truly dark, and the thick rock walls may prevent teleporting to and from this location. Keep an eye out for an item that could make this area a LOT easier to deal with.

Klizat the Drow warlord of Zolgath has spent half his money on a nice new magical elf killing sword. Elves beware, this sword is for Drow only.

Disgusted with the piles of dead newbies, the Mages who live in the Mage guild have removed the deadly traps from their doors.

Did you knowThe Wheel of Misfortune located in the Carnival south of Comlet Castle is the only way to over-max stats? (well, without dying) Beware though, for if lady luck does not smile on you, you could find yourself suffering stat loss or even a sex change!

The Player Tournament exists? If you are high level, feel that you have seen and done it all, why not sign up? The Player Tournament bypasses the PK rules and assigns another player as a target for you to kill. Watch your back though, because someone else will be hunting you. In addition to an XP bonus for killing, the winner of each round will get a nice prize, custom coded for them. The sign up room is near the fighters guild.

You get a big repair bonus for repairing weapon by doing it at the forge? Even the best weapon repairman has a much higher chance of breaking the weapon they are trying to repair if they do it anywhere but the forge.

True Stories of the Bug PatrolThose annoying thief title typos have been fixed. No more Burlgars here.

Spotted by Jant, the refugees in Boznia had cloaks made of iron. Not any more.

The Drow Officers Club, where Klizats warrior drink, now has a working menu.

Ordering your pet without giving a command will no longer cause an error.

You will be able to look at items in your inventory while in jail now.

AI UpdateThose interesting AI monsters have had one frustrating flaw until recently: The ones with high dex would flee combat so fast you couldn't get a hit in. You would chase one, it would hit you and leave before you could return the favor. That is no more.
The fleeing of the AI's has been slowed down, but to make things a little more interesting they may flee more than one room away.

UpcomingYou either love it or hate it, but mud marriages are a part of the mudding experience. Overcoming my initial distaste for such things, a Wedding Chapel is in the works. It is pretty much completed but it needs some polishing before it is ready for players. In particular I want to included a long and EXPENSIVE divorce procedure. Be forewarned, any marriages performed by Darktoast or Xanax may be legally binding.

Since general PK is not turned on, the only way to use the current arena is for two players to first join the tournament (see the Did you know section). However an Expanded arena is in the works. This area will set PK to ON for two players who enter it. They will have several rooms to battle to the death in, and other players will be able to watch safely out the window of a nearby pub. There will be no life, skill or stat losses for players who choose to use the new arena, and they will be immediatley raised to go try it again.

Wizards CornerThere have been some new commands added for creators. I think that you will find them useful, I know I do!

Grep
Grep is used to find a string in a file or in a number of files. This is useful if you forget which room has a certain monster cloned in it, and for many other things.
Syntax: grep string file || files
Examples: grep dsword4 /d/twilight/w/valmoran/delf/monst/*.c (who clones the drow sword?)
grep MONSTER /d/twilight/w/darktoast/dino/monst/*.c (for find which rooms clone a monster)

Where
Ever find yourself wonder what room in your area a player is in, but not be able to get the full path from the people command? I know it used to happen to me all the time. Not anymore.
Syntax: where shecktar (will show where the player shecktar is at)
where (will show where everyone logged in is at)

Nslookup
Nslookup is cool. Unless you have a good memory for numbers, figuring out where someone is logged in from by IP address can be a pain. nslookup gives you the domain name rather than the IP address.
Syntax: nslookup darktoast (Will prolly show either bankamerica.com or sdic.net)
nslookup (will show the domain name of everyone logged in)

Behind the ScenesWelcome back Melvin! Having recently opened his first area, the cannibal village by the Weslar swamp (described last issue) Melvin is now a creator on the player site. Give him a big ol' Malevolent welcome next time you see him.

Welcome back Ping! Having survived a nearly deadly stabbing last year Ping has returned to the realms of Malevolence. You may remember him as the one-time Domain Lord of Oceana. He is busy coding stuff at the development site, so you may only see him on the player site infrequently.

Welcome Camachy! The first creator to be promoted from the ranks of the players, Camachy has been working on a really twisted area. While a newbie at coding, his descriptions and imagination are great! Keep an eye out for his code to open in the not-to-distant future.

The new server mentioned in the last issue has been shipped. It should be online by late next week, with it becoming the player site shortly thereafter. There should be no visible change for players (except maybe a little faster!) but creators will enjoy the priviledge of having an FTP account.
